The City of Overland Park is seeking qualified, dedicated legal professionals to serve as Public Defenders for the Municipal Court. This role is essential to ensuring the fair administration of justice and providing high-quality legal representation to indigent defendants.

Position Overview

The Public Defender provides legal representation and advocacy for individuals appearing before the Overland Park Municipal Court. The selected candidate should demonstrate a strong understanding of state and local law and a commitment to serving the public interest.

The selected candidate would be willing to accept a variety of appointed cases and be available to appear at court dates at the Overland Park Municipal Court to assist in the adjudication of assigned cases.

Professional Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active member of the Kansas Bar in good standing.
  • Minimum of three years of legal experience, with five years preferred.
  • Substantial background in municipal, public, or local government law preferred.
  • Exceptional oral advocacy, legal research, and writing skills.
  • Ability to manage a diverse caseload effectively.

Compensation

Services would be provided on a contractual basis. Compensation is offered on a fee-per-service, per-case basis for adjudicated cases. Public defenders are also provided an annual $5,000 retainer fee.
