Position Overview

Johnson County Legal Services is seeking a highly motivated third-year law student or recent graduate for an Assistant County Counselor I position within the Records & Taxation Division. This role offers hands-on litigation and administrative hearing experience, including work before the Kansas Board of Tax Appeals and co-counsel opportunities in civil litigation matters.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Represent Johnson County in commercial and business personal property valuation appeals before the Kansas Board of Tax Appeals.
  • Manage administrative hearing matters from intake through final order.
  • Conduct direct and cross-examination of appraisal and valuation experts.
  • Coordinate with the Johnson County Appraiser’s Office on exhibits and litigation strategy.
  • Serve as co-counsel with senior County attorneys on civil litigation matters.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, memoranda, and appellate filings.
  • Participate in hearings, oral arguments, and professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • Enrollment in an ABA-accredited law school at the third-year level, or J.D. awarded no earlier than December 2024.
  • Eligible for admission to the Kansas Bar upon graduation, or currently admitted.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Interest in litigation, administrative law, or government/public sector practice.
  • Commitment to public service and professional excellence.
